Just Birding along

13 05 2013

Its been a while sense my last blog! I been busy focusing on Birding & getting the things i need to help me see and ID birds like binoculars & a Birding Field guide. I picked up ‘Stokes Field Guide to Birds Eastern Region’ at Barns & Noble. Its a great guide and already i was able to ID 2 birds from it!  Thanks to Melissa for recriminating it to me!

Either im at a local park or just down at the creek I been seeing and hearing more than i can get a shot at! Now that May is here the Summer birds are starting to slowly come around! The one bird i want to see, hear and get shots of most is my Lifer & favorite Baltimore Oriole! Cant wait to catch him! Warblers are driving me nuts to catch as they are small, fast & high! Its really hard to get a shot of them and there is sooo many types of them too!  I have caught a Pileated Woodpecker, I love his red spiky hair!  Red-Bellied Woodpecker, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Chipping Sparrow, & a Catbird! Catbirds are cool they sound like a cat MEOW!

HOPEFULLY I’ll catch more new birds & that ORIOLE soon!

Birding is Awesome!

12 04 2013

Scene my last Birding blog i found out that Birding is very fun, Awesome & Addicting hobby! A HUGE THANKS To my friend & neighbor Melissa for getting me into Birding! Just within the last few weeks  Melissa has showed & tough me alot about birding & its only gonna get funner and better!

Birding is a awesome way to get motivated to get out and get some good exercise by walking/hiking the trails in the woods and the creek! We have an awesome creek for that! I been going down there every morning everyday this week for anywhere between 1/2 hour to 2 hours! If the weather and birding is good i could stay down there all day! There is a huge hill behind Melissa’s house that im tempting to climb!

Untill this passed Wednesday I never seen so many ducks before! WOW Holy DUCKS! There had to be a least 100 different Ducks & Birds at the river! There is this thing they call FallOut and the cause of that is when you have a thunderstorm and the birds flying place to place just drop down untill its good for them to fly again! We got the river and i couldnt believe how many where! They were all on the far side from us so it hard to take picts you need a scope or binoculars to see them good! They were pretty cool! Thursday morning we went back to the river on the side all the ducks were hoping to see them but they all left except a few in a nearby pond! That was so cool! A Bold Eagle live in that area too but didnt see it, Hopefully soon I will catch it! Never seen a Bold Eagle in the wild!

Already i have seen or heard 48 Species of Birds! Canada Goose, Mallard,  Blue-winged Teal,  Greater Scaup,  Long-tailed Duck,  Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Common Merganser,  Ruffed Grouse,  Common Loon, Pied-billed Grebe,  Horned Grebe,  Double-crested Cormorant,  Great Blue Heron,  Red-tailed Hawk,  Killdeer,  Bonaparte’s Gull,  Caspian Tern, Mourning Dove,  Belted Kingfisher,  Red-bellied Woodpecker,  Downy Woodpecker,  Hairy Woodpecker,  Northern Flicker, Pileated Woodpecker,  Eastern Phoebe, Blue Jay,  American Crow,  Tree Swallow,  Black-capped Chickadee,  Tufted Titmouse,  Brown Creeper,  Carolina Wren,  Golden-crowned Kinglet,  American Robin,  European Starling,  Song Sparrow,  Dark-eyed Junco,  Northern Cardinal,  Red-winged Blackbird,  Common Grackle,  Common Redpoll,  Pine Siskin,  American Goldfinch   Fox Sparrow,  Turkey Vulture,  White-breasted Nuthatch

I had been inspired and motivate into Nature and Birds from my neighbor Melissa! Melissa is huge into birds and takes awesome photos of them! See for your self at her facebook page!  https://www.facebook.com/mydigitalmindphotography

This passed Saturday I had the chance to go with Melissa on a Nature hike at Binghamton University Nature Preserve! It was a great time despite the cold snowy weather and icy trails! Saw a few birds and heard many birds singing. The Canadian Gesse were the only ones i could get good shots of from my camera!  Its a pretty nice relaxful atmosphere out there in the woods! Its also a good workout hiking out there too! I need to get out there more often!

Heres what we saw & heard out there!

This is what we saw:
Canada Geese, Mallard Ducks, Black-capped Chickadee (singing too), Red-winged Blackbirds (singing), Song Sparrows (singing), Fox Sparrows (the one we tried very hard to get good looks of because they are only around for a couple of weeks), Turkey Vultures flying, American Crows, American Robins, Northern Cardinals

This is what we heard only:
Tufted Titmouse, Pileated Woodpecker, Blue Jay

Im just getting started into this new hobby! There is so many birds to learn about! I always loved the big guys like the Eagles & Hawks as a matter of fact you can watch a live wed cam of the Red-Tailed Hawks from Cornell College here http://cams.allaboutbirds.org/channel/16/Red-tailed_Hawks/  My favorite small bird is the Baltimore Oriole! I cant wait till they come around and get some good shots of them! They come around here in mid Spring i believe in May!

My mom has a nice birdfeeder setup she had for years but i never payed any attention or cared for it but that has now changed thanks to Melissa! I gonna start paying more attention to wildlife down at the creek!

Heres a few shots i took at BU Saturday
