Phoenix Sprint Cup Race

28 02 2011

The Cup race was the best race of weekend! It was wild and exciting with lots of action and the weather made it for a good race day! There were 28 lead changes and 8 cautions!

It didnt take long for the action to start and it all came before the hafeway mark. On lap 51 Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne wrecked and would finish 40th. On lap 60 Kyle Bush slamed into Carl Edwards causing a 5 car wreck collecting Kevin Harvick,Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton. Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch were able to rebound from that wreck. What was Kyle Busch thinking? He wasnt!!

The big wreck happened on lap 68 collecting 14 drivers and bringing out a 14 min red flag for track cleanup. All the drivers were OK! Dale Jr was invold in it and was able to rebound back from it finishing 10th. Jamie McMurray,Jeff Burton,Clint Bowyer wasnt able to finish the race. Most drivers were able to fix the cars and return to the race to salvage what they could. You never think a 14 car wreck would happen at PIR! It looked like they were still in Daytona or at Talladega.

Jeff Gordon was able to pass Kyle Busch with 8 laps to go and took the win! This was Jeff’s first win in 66 races! With this win Jeff tied Cale Yarborough for 5th in all times wins! This win was also Jeff’s 2nd PIR win he tired Dale Earnhardt on the win list at his first PIR win!

The top 5 were 1 Jeff Gordon 2 Kyle Busch 3 Jimmie Johnson 4 Kevin Harvick 5 Ryan Newman. Kyle Busch left PIR with the points lead.  See Nascar.com or my favorite Jayski.com for the results and other info.

Tjmajors (Dale Jr’s spotter) Can’t believe we made it thru some of that stuff today. We had a lot of little things go wrong and still overcame them for 10th.

StewartHaasRcng Both SHR cars finished in the top-10 at Phoenix. The last time that happened? The 2010 finale at Homestead. Newman was 7th, Stewart was 8th.
JLogano So that was no fun we had a fast home depot ride for the first few laps then dropped a cylinder and finally blew up
